Vessel Management Software for Naval Fleet Operations
ABOUT THE CLIENT
The client is a private company operating in the maritime defence sector, focused on managing and optimizing high-uptime assets such as warships. Their services cover business and asset optimization aimed at maintaining and enhancing fleet capability. Eastoner has partnered with a team on legacy modernization of their fleet management platform for over a year, on an ongoing basis.
CLIENT GOAL
The client's existing naval fleet management system was outdated and difficult to maintain, limiting their ability to track and manage critical assets effectively. Document management, ship parameter processing, and financial data handling all ran through a legacy platform that hindered automation and made updates hard to implement without breaking other parts of the system.
The client needed a secure, centralized solution that could automate the manual processes weighing down their team, while meeting the security and compliance requirements that come with handling sensitive naval information.
CHALLENGES AND SOLUTION
Complete ship management system modernization
The existing architecture made updates and maintenance difficult, and the interface needed a full redesign. After an in-depth analysis, Eastoner selected a new technology set and moved the platform to a three-layer architecture, separating the data access layer, business logic, and controllers. This made the codebase easier to navigate and improved system flexibility for future changes.
We replaced the existing data computing and storage systems, which had grown complex and inefficient, with a more streamlined implementation, reducing the overall codebase while encapsulating data more effectively. The modernized system is now split into modules by function: ship data import, fleet management, dashboard views, and others. Because the platform handles sensitive naval data, we implemented role-based access control and encryption throughout.
Fleet-wide visibility and maintenance tracking
The platform maintains a fleet register along with parts and equipment records, simplifying maintenance and inventory management. It holds information on every ship in the fleet, including type, classification, and location, to support maintenance planning. Marine operations teams ashore and onboard crews can access the system according to their permissions, order necessary parts, track maintenance history, and confirm asset condition, all from the same platform.
Additional features built into this module:
-
Two-way conversion between Word documents and XML, with a built-in editing and approval workflow
-
A multifunctional dashboard displaying system data as graphs
-
An admin panel for access control and predefined configuration changes
Throughout development, we worked closely with the client to suggest optimizations that preserved required functionality while cutting development time.
Automating document creation
Because the platform supports government-related operations, automating document creation was critical for compliance, reducing human error, and handling data efficiently. We built a document builder tool that digitizes a process that used to be entirely manual, supporting documents with extensive data and complex structures. Documents convert into lightweight XML, enabling faster retrieval and more structured processing than the original format allowed.
RESULT
Within the first year of collaboration, the modernized platform enabled real-time monitoring of ship conditions, predictive maintenance, and failure prevention, cutting into the downtime the client experienced under the legacy system. The new three-layer architecture and modular structure make the system easier to update going forward, without the risk of one change breaking unrelated functionality.
The one-click document builder alone saved the client meaningful time and operational cost, while ensuring maintenance-related documentation gets completed on schedule. The platform now runs with role-based access and encryption in place across the system, meeting the security bar required for handling sensitive naval information.
